Cleaners are often at risk of developing contact dermatitis, particularly on the hands and forearms due to repeated wetness and contact with chemicals. Dermatitis manifests itself as redness, itches, swelling, blisters, flaked and cracked skin – it’s uncomfortable and can be severe enough to prevent you from doing your job. Follow the simple guidance below to ensure you keep yourself safe and well:
- AVOID – avoid tasks that involve contact with chemicals, food or water. Ie use a dishwasher instead of washing up by hand, use utensils and tools rather than your bare hands.
- PROTECT – wear non-allergenic gloves at all times, use a skin conditioner cream before and after work to boost your skin’s resistance.
- CHECK – look out for signs of dry, inflamed or broken skin – the earlier treatment is started, the more effective it will be.
